Today we announced that RightScale acquired Scotland-based ShopForCloud, a free cloud cost forecasting website, and renamed it PlanForCloud. The website makes it easy to budget for your future cloud costs by giving you a set of tools to model your deployments and your usage patterns and automatically calculate costs across a variety of clouds. PlanForCloud currently includes support for Amazon Web Services, Google Compute Engine, Rackspace and Microsoft Windows Azure with more clouds coming soon.
As many of you know, predicting cloud costs with spreadsheet models can be challenging. The pricing models from each cloud are complex due to the wide variety of options available and those prices can change frequently. In addition, most companies plan to use multiple cloud options, each with a different pricing model, increasing the complexity even further.
With PlanForCloud, you define the architecture of your deployment, including servers, storage, databases, and data transfer. You then layer on usage patterns, including growth, seasonality, product launches, or other changes in your cloud workload. PlanForCloud automatically calculates your three-year costs, including monthly costs and breakdown by cost type.
Scenario analysis is easy. Simply clone an existing deployment and make the necessary changes. When cloud prices change, you can log in and access updated cost forecasts. No current cloud accounts or credentials are required to use PlanForCloud, and you don’t need to be a RightScale customer or user. Just go to PlanForCloud and try it out as a guest. If you want to create and re-use scenarios, simply set up a free PlanForCloud account to save your work.
For RightScale users, the cost forecasting in PlanForCloud is complementary to the historical cost tracking available in RightScale. Going forward, we plan to provide further integration between PlanForCloud and RightScale, while still preserving the free PlanForCloud website.
PlanForCloud was built by a small, focused team in Edinburgh, Scotland. The co-founders, brothers Ali and Hassan Khajeh-Hosseini, have lots of great ideas for new features and will continue to expand the PlanForCloud service. We also intend to invest in and grow the team in Edinburgh.
