As you say: convincing the network managers in any large organization to open port 5672 on tens of firewalls "by default" is almost impossible. In recent history (say this century:-), I've seen no success story in the enterprise for anything not tunneled on http. I agree that a standard MOM protocol is a "good thing", and AMQP a good candidate, but I am pessimistic about its deployment ,considering that it hurts IBM, TIBCO, Microsoft and even small JMS players. No big player has any interest into its success. The only positive signal is that CISCO loves it :-)
