Managing Large-Scale User-Access Control with the RightScale API

Posted by Ryan Geyer   Ι   January 10, 2013 1 comment
What's with the check boxes you ask? It's a partial visual representation of what it looks like to manage 83 users, 15 RightScale accounts, and 11 permissions for each user in each account. That's 13,695 check boxes I'd potentially need to click. So I decided that I needed to either hunker down with a carafe of coffee for a few days or find a better solution! What's with the check boxes you ask?...Read more

RightScale Enterprise Security Features Unleashed

Posted by Phil Cox   Ι   August 08, 2012 0 comments
We have been busy this summer working on a number of security- and governance-related features for our Enterprise Edition customers, who are typically large organizations that have well-defined internal user identity and compliance structures. With the latest RightScale release , we have improved or added on to the following features: Managed SSH Login Single Sign-On with SAML API-Based...Read more

Cloud APIs: It's the Architecture that Matters

Lack of excitement is not something the cloud market can be accused of! Citrix just announced a bold roadmap for its CloudStack platform coming right on the heels of a Eucalyptus and Amazon announcement to extend API compatibility and just two weeks before the OpenStack summit. My prediction for 2012: we will exit the year with as many cloud APIs as we had when we entered, and it doesn't really...Read more

New MultiCloud API, New Add Server Assistant, and Community Translations

This is the first of three posts you'll be seeing regarding everything we're releasing over the next couple of weeks. First, we had a new dashboard release tonight, which I'll tell you about below. Next week, we're releasing some sophisticated multi-cloud ServerTemplates that work across a few clouds. Finally, we'll wrap up with how to create an auto-scaling Windows IIS/.NET application on top of...Read more

VMops Rebrands to Cloud.com and Opens Source

Pretty bold move by VMops! It bought the cloud.com domain and is rebranding to Cloud.com on the occasion of its new release, now called CloudStack 2.0, which it is also open-sourcing at open.cloud.com . It thus joins the open source private cloud landscape that Eucalyptus pioneered. We've been seeing a lot of interest in the private cloud space and have been working with Eucalyptus for a long...Read more

Top Cloud API Sins

Here is a short list of the top poor design decisions that I've seen in cloud APIs. Let me rephrase that: Here's a short list of the top API features that got in our way or simply didn't work for us. There may well be other use cases where these features make sense. Listing of resources without the details, e.g., a list-servers call that doesn't return all the details for each server. This makes...Read more

Cloud API Requirements

Does a standard cloud API makes sense? I'm still of the opinion that there is too much diversity out there and that the time is not ripe yet. There are many indispensable features in Amazon EC2 that no-one else has implemented at scale or for which there is no different take. The whole EBS feature set is one example. Image sharing and publishing is another one. Elastic IPs is another example...Read more
