Technical Challenge:

ForeclosureRadar.com only received 30 days notice before "60 Minutes" would feature their website as a key tool for investors and real estate professionals in the foreclosure market of California. In order to handle the anticipated increase in site traffic, they estimated a need for 20 additional servers and a much larger database server. Even though their site's traffic would likely only spike for a few days after the segment aired, their current provider required one year leases on any additional servers, as well as load balancing equipment—an increase of nearly $60k for the year!

ForeclosureRadar was convinced that cloud computing offered an ideal alternative to their dedicated hosting solution because it offered an efficient and cost-effective solution for adding additional server resources. They chose RightScale to help them build and manage a scalable web platform on Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). Within a few weeks, their production site was fully deployed on EC2 despite their complete unfamiliarity of RightScale and Amazon Web Services. After the show aired, ForeclosureRadar satisfied each page request and paid less than $1,000 for the additional server time on EC2.

Animoto automatically generates professionally produced videos using their own patent-pending technology and high-end motion design. Each video is a fully customized orchestration of user-generated and selected images and music. Produced on a widescreen format, Animoto videos have the visual energy of a music video and the emotional impact of a movie trailer. But these videos also require substantial computing resources to produce – and must scale at the level of a popular consumer application.

With its game-changing business model, TuneCore has experienced rapid growth in subscribers, and distributed over $1.4M in royalties in the last year.
