RightScale Customers Expand Cloud Workloads
Customers Develop Over 40,000 RightScale ServerTemplates for Cloud Deployments; Number Doubles in Past Year
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. March 22, 2011 RightScale®, Inc., the leader in cloud computing management, today announced that RightScale customers have substantially expanded the use of cloud computing in their companies, with a rapid increase in the number and variety of RightScale ServerTemplates™ developed by users to meet the specific needs of their businesses. To date, customers have developed 42,500 cloud-ready RightScale ServerTemplates – which are customizable, reusable templates for automatically configuring and deploying servers across public and private clouds – representing double the number created by customers this time last year.
"We know our users have been creating a large number of customized ServerTemplates, and we were pleased to see the velocity of growth over the past year," said Michael Crandell, RightScale CEO. "One of the most powerful properties of RightScale ServerTemplates is their automation and multi-cloud adaptability, and this makes clear how our customers are increasingly adapting RightScale’s ServerTemplates – as well as building them from scratch – to meet their unique cloud computing workload requirements. We see this growth as a strong validation of the ServerTemplate approach to multi-cloud server automation, as well as growing customer sophistication and cloud adoption in the market."
RightScale ServerTemplates: The Foundation for Multi-Cloud Automation
RightScale ServerTemplates are completely transparent, reusable, and customizable templates for automatically configuring cloud servers which enable multi-cloud deployment and dynamic provisioning delivered by the RightScale Cloud Management Platform. ServerTemplates start with a base multi-cloud image and then layer in the needed applications and configurations at boot time. ServerTemplates specify in a flexible, reusable model all the software components of a cloud server, ranging from the operating system and system utilities to middleware and the application itself. They automatically configure servers at launch time by, for example, installing necessary packages, initializing storage volumes, activating monitoring and auditing systems, and setting up connections with other servers within a system deployment. Furthermore, they encapsulate operational runbook procedures so they can be initiated with a click of a button.
Hundreds of best practice ServerTemplates developed by RightScale and RightScale partners have been published in the RightScale Library, which now includes ServerTemplates spanning a variety of categories -- from database and application servers, to business intelligence, content management and more. Because ServerTemplates are completely readable in source form, they are easy for customers to share, clone and tailor to meet specific requirements. Over time, customers can build a repository of their own ServerTemplates that represent valuable corporate knowledge and requirements. In fact, while 42 percent of the customer-developed ServerTemplates were built from RightScale best-practice ServerTemplates, 58 percent were created from scratch or from partner templates – illustrating the breadth of cloud development undertaken by RightScale users to address their particular business needs.
"ServerTemplates are a leap forward, enabling cloud servers to be launched and dynamically configured at run time without any manual work," said Tim Jones, CTO at Trader Media Group. "They are built on reusable components, which saves untold time in creating new or similar configurations, or expanding from test and development to production. RightScale ServerTemplates are fundamental to a truly automated multi-cloud infrastructure.
