Overview

Eucalyptus Systems delivers private cloud software. This is infrastructure software that enables enterprises and government agencies to establish their own cloud computing environments. With Eucalyptus, customers make more efficient use of their computing capacity, thus increasing productivity and innovation, deploying new applications faster, and protecting sensitive data, while reducing capital expenditure. Eucalyptus is open-source software and Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition contains the open-source software platform as well as a suite of proprietary solutions.

Technology

Eucalyptus is a series of web service components that are installed on your hardware infrastructure, transforming your resources into a dynamic and self-service-capable cloud computing platform. Eucalyptus is compatible with all of the major Linux distributions, and can be installed on your existing systems. It supports several industry-standard hypervisors, including Xen, KVM, and VMware and it exposes an Amazon EC2-compatible management API on top of your resources.

Eucalyptus implements the cloud computing infrastructure in a modular architecture, including the Cloud Controller (CLC) which provides top-level management and the EC2 API layer; the Cluster Controller (CC) which manages the individual Node Controllers (NCs) which in turn manage the individual hypervisors. Storage is managed using two components: Walrus, which implements the Amazon S3-like get/put object-based storage mechanism; and the Storage Controller (SC), which provides block-access devices to the individual machine instances.

Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition is a suite of products that is implemented with the open-source core, providing advanced features such as direct SAN integration, VMware ESX/ESXi/vCenter management, High Availability, and Microsoft Windows guest support.
