Couchbase is the NoSQL database market share leader, with production deployments at AOL, Deutsche Post, NTT Docomo, Orbitz, Salesforce.com, Turner Broadcasting Systems, Vimeo, Zynga and hundreds of other household names worldwide. Couchbase Server is a simple, fast, elastic NoSQL database that delivers a more scalable, high-performance, and cost-effective approach to data management than relational database technology. It is particularly well suited for web applications deployed on virtualized or cloud infrastructures, and for applications requiring real-time data synchronization between mobile devices and the cloud. Couchbase is a privately held company funded by Accel Partners, Ignition Partners, Mayfield Fund and North Bridge Venture Partners. www.couchbase.com
Couchbase Server is a simple, fast, elastic document database that stores web application data far more efficiently and cost effectively than it can be stored in a relational database (RDBMS). With Couchbase Server, organizations can deploy a highly available, cloud-friendly data layer that, unlike relational technology, scales “out” (not up), expanding and rebalancing dynamically as application needs change.
Interactive web applications must service many concurrent users; creating, storing, retrieving, aggregating, manipulating and presenting data in real-time. Supporting these requirements, Couchbase Server processes data operations with quasi-deterministic low latency and high sustained throughput. It scales linearly from a single-server deployment to a cluster of thousands of machines. And because it does not require creation of a schema before storing data, it is a flexible, cost-effective place to store large amounts of web application data.
For those familiar with memcached, Couchbase Server provides on-the-wire protocol compatibility, but adds disk persistence; hierarchical storage management; data replication; live cluster reconfiguration and rebalancing; and secure multitenancy with data partitioning. Like memcached, Couchbase Server is simple, fast and elastic.
Couchbase teamed with RightScale in September 2010 to create the Couchbase ServerTemplate, making it even easier to deploy, manage and scale Couchbase in cloud-based environments.
The Couchbase RightScale ServerTemplate allows organizations to:
- Create massive multi-user web applications which scale-out to maintain high-performance, while using cost-effective commodity servers.
- Quickly prototype and prove-out web applications without purchasing and implementing new IT infrastructure
- Offload expensive processing from overburdened relational databases and avoid manual sharding of datasets
- Multi-tenancy, critical for SaaS applications
