With the advent of social media, and the impact of external events, websites can get sudden and unforeseen spikes in traffic.

It's been nearly impossible (due to cost and complexity) to simulate today's real world web traffic. As a result, most websites are not properly tested. By leveraging the cloud computing, CloudTest enables companies to quickly and affordably simulate and test for these unprecedented spikes in traffic.

Technology

CloudTest is an Ajax-based application built on a massively parallel, multi–threaded architecture that enables web-scale load testing. All of the components of the SOASTA CloudTest architecture are services-based and can be installed on different physical servers to maximize scale and performance. This architectural flexibility allows the SOASTA CloudTest application to be run in many hardware configurations, from a single server all the way to a complex global test network of cloud servers capable of running tests from nodes distributed around the world.

CloudTest leverages a real-time Business Intelligence engine purpose-built for Performance Management. This analytic engine includes a unique data extraction layer that captures any Web Performance metric. All the metrics are then aggregated and correlated onto a single real-time timeline using the CloudTest Analytics engine. Performance engineers can quickly identify issues and optimize the performance of websites and web applications while tests are being run.

Cloud-based applications have just as much need for performance tuning as applications deployed on premise. While scaling can be automated, simply throwing servers at problem is often the wrong approach. SOASTA has years of expertise leveraging the Cloud to test Cloud-based applications. SOASTA provides CloudTest as an on-demand service.

Partnership

RightScale and SOASTA are partners in performance. Not all virtualized resources are created equal. While access to elastic resources is good for responding to peak requirements, simply scaling hardware does not necessarily solve underlying performance problems or the impact of a poorly designed application. It doesn’t tell you if you have too few load balancers, are missing database indexes or have improper settings in your firewall. And because so many applications being deployed to the Cloud are customer facing, reliability and performance are critical.

SOASTA teams with RightScale by measuring baseline and peak performance, for both custom apps deployed using the RightScale Cloud Management Platform and modified prepackaged ServerTemplates. Lessons learned from the Performance Intelligence gathered through testing helps customers make good architectural decisions, which are then put into action using the RightScale platform.

In addition, when executing and analyzing performance and load tests, development and operations teams often need to manually combine and correlate data from disparate sources displayed in multiple dashboards. Integrating the rich performance results gathered by CloudTest with the system resource monitoring provided by RightScale gives testers a consolidated view in real-time, and leverages SOASTA’s CloudTest Analytics to quickly pinpoint the source of problems.
